Xal's Path v1.1.0 - A Sneak Peek at the New Look
A first look at the major update coming to Xal's Path with upgraded art and a modern engine.
Kevin Logan
It's been a while since Xal's Path first launched back in 2022, and a lot has changed since then, including me. I've grown as a developer, the tools have gotten better, and honestly, this game deserves a major update given all the major AI improvements coming out.
I also want to give a shout-out to Dan Bellinski, whose recent re-release of Mort’s Minions inspired me to do this.
That's why I'm thrilled to give you your first official look at v1.1.0.
This isn't just a technical update; it's a full art redesign from the ground up. Every sprite and animation has been rethought and rebuilt.
What's Changing Under the Hood
First, the remaster is being built on the latest version of Unity, bringing the game up to modern technical standards and allowing the game to perform how it was initially envisioned.
But the part of the game that I’m the most excited about is the art.
Xal — Then vs. Now
The main character himself got the most attention. Xal's original design did its job, but the remaster gave me a chance to lean in and bring out his true form.
All of his shortcomings from the first iteration have been fixed, and I've given him a fresh set of animations as you interact with him throughout the story.
Fire Horse — Then vs. Now
The Fire Horse was always one of the more visually striking elements of the game, and the redesign takes that to another level. This horse was actually the very first creature designed in the entire game.
The new version brings more fluid movement and a much more dramatic presence. Watch both GIFs back to back; the difference is hard to miss.
The Wisp — Then vs. Now
The Wisp might be the most transformed of the three. What was once a floating head has now been completely reimagined. This creature is scary now, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it has turned out.
What's Next
This is just the beginning of what I'll be sharing as development continues.
I'm aiming to have the remaster available on TestFlight in May, so you can get hands-on with it soon.
In the meantime, your feedback is incredibly valuable. If you have thoughts, suggestions, or things you'd like to see, please reach out.
Stay tuned as we get closer to launch.
